Merle Cable of Northwood, Baltimore, Maryland, a registered professional engineer for over 45 years, passed away on March 2. Merle was born in Campton, Kentucky in 1924 to Smollie and Belle Cable. He was raised in Wolfe County, KY until he joined the U. S. Navy during World War II. Following basic training he was selected for submarine service and was assigned to a number of boats to include the USS Permit and the USS Finback, the boat that recovered downed pilot George H. W. Bush (prior to his assignment). His duties as torpedo man involved testing experimental munitions following the end of the war.
He returned to Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky on the GI bill. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering. His first job following graduation was with a contractor building the approaches of the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel from 1954 to 1957. His many projects included construction of Interstate 83 into Baltimore, Interstates into Chicago, IL and throughout New Jersey, and the MTA Compressed Natural Gas Facility and bus facility at Northwest Plaza as well as many other major road projects.
A lifetime hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed teaching his late girlfriend, Doris McPherson, to hunt squirrels and fish the Bay. For years it was always wise to ask about the menu items before accepting a dinner invitation at the Cable family table. His love of fishing continued into the fall of 2016 and he particularly enjoyed teaching children how to fish.
Merle is survived by his son, David Cable of Baltimore, and a brother, Rex Cable of Florida as well as his many friends in Maryland, Illinois and Kentucky.
