Julia Lillian Walther Sims (nee Lipka)

1/9/1927 – 4/4/2020

Beloved mother of Julia Walther passed peacefully in her sleep. She is survived by sister Stella Childress and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by sisters Josephine Sakowski, Mary Orzech, Helen Foy and brothers Edward Lipka and Thomas Lipka.

Julia, known by all who knew her as ‘Lil’, worked for The American Can Company until its closing in 1981. During her retirement ‘Lil’ became an active member of the Canton-Highlandtown Community Association (CHICA) where she worked tirelessly to help improve the Canton-Highlandtown Community. In addition to her community work ‘Lil’ was a source of knowledge of the history of Canton, as well as a member of the Painted Screen Society of Baltimore, MD, of which her brother Thomas was a master screen painter. ‘Lil’ assisted many a neighbor (old and new) with anything they needed from taking delivered packages, shoveling snow, cleaning the streets, guarding houses when residents went away, giving guidance in navigating the city government bureaucracy, whatever she was called on to do. For all her assistance to the neighborhood, ‘Lil’ earned many awards and accolades including a ‘Best of Baltimore’ silver award presented in a ceremony by then Mayor Kurt Schmoke and hosted by the legendary John Waters.

Services and Interment are private. A Celebration of ‘Lil’s’ life will take place on a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in ‘Lil’s’ name to BARCS.
