+Friar Leonard Katusz, OFM Conv., was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on June 30, 1948, and passed away suddenly on May 3, 2017.   He was the son of +Leonard and +Rose Marie (Mager) Katusz.  In addition to his Franciscan family, Brother Leonard is survived by his sister Christine Perkins, his niece Jeanine Harper and husband Tony, and his nephew Lowen Crusan and wife Annabelle.  His sister + Sr. Rose Monica Katusz, OSF predeceased him.

Friar Leonard entered the Novitiate of the Franciscan Friars Conventual, August 14, 1966 in Ellicott City, MD.   He professed his Solemn Vows on August 14, 1971.  He received and B.A. in Philosophy from St. Hyacinth College and Seminary, Granby, MA in 1971.  In 1973, he received an M.S.L.S. in Library Science from The Catholic University of America.

In 1973, Brother Leonard’s first assignment was as the Librarian for Kolbe High School, Bridgeport, CT.  Brother Leonard served as Librarian at St. Hyacinth College and Seminary from 1974-1993 where Bev Wilson assisted him.  During his tenure at St. Hyacinth, Brother Leonard touched the lives of many young friars and he is remembered fondly for his infectious laugh and care for the students.

After a Sabbatical, Brother Leonard became the Librarian at Archbishop Curley High School, Baltimore, MD from 1994-1989.  In the years from 1998 to 2003, he worked in internal ministry in the Franciscan community.  In 2003, he became an Assistant Librarian at The Catholic University of America until his retirement in 2016.  Currently he was service as our Province Archivist in Rensselaer, NY.

Visiting hours will be held on May 9, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Casimir Church, Baltimore, MD.   A Franciscan Wake Service will take place at 7 p.m.   On               Wednesday, May 10, 2017, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. preceded by visitation 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.   Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.   Any Memorial Donations may be made to the Companions of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21042.
